Steven J. Levy serves as a Managing Director of Sprague Energy, headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Founded in 1870, Sprague boasts a rich, 150-year history of adapting to the evolving energy landscape and providing innovative solutions.

Today, Sprague Energy is one of the largest independent energy suppliers in the Northeast, serving over 25,000 commercial, industrial, wholesale, and government customers across the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Quebec. Leveraging strategically located terminals and natural gas pipeline access, the company offers a diverse portfolio encompassing fuel storage and delivery, electricity, natural gas, solar energy solutions, and comprehensive material handling and storage services.

For more than a century and a half, Sprague has consistently evolved. “We’ve seen dramatic changes in our industry,” notes Levy. “Heating fuels have shifted from high-sulfur to ultra-low-sulfur, with the goal of reducing carbon emissions.” Sprague has often been at the forefront of these shifts.

In 2000, demonstrating a proactive approach, the company pioneered the commercialization of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) – ten years ahead of the EPA mandate – and introduced biodiesel, becoming the first nationally recognized Clean Fuels Alliance America (formally the National Biodiesel Board) Certified BQ-9000 Marketer in the U.S. Sprague receiving Cleans Fuels Alliance America Impact Award for its efforts to introduce biodiesel to the market.

Biodiesel, made from renewable feedstocks like soybeans, corn, and canola, is a cleaner-burning fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on foreign oil. Sprague provides biodiesel blends—ranging from B2 to B100—for applications from diesel engines to home heating oil, with no need for additional infrastructure or equipment modifications.

Levy recently discussed the future of the home heating fuel industry on the Mission Possible podcast, produced by the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association (CEMA). The podcast explores the evolution of the home heating fuel sector and highlights the industry’s commitment to cleaner fuels and exceptional customer service.

From innovating with cleaner fuels, to serving as a leading wind energy component handler for onshore projects throughout New England over the last 20 years and deploying leading-edge liquid tank top solar technology to help power terminal facilities, Sprague is committed to providing cleaner and more sustainable energy options that drive progress and reduce environmental impact.
