Break down $1 worth of gasoline and here we show consumers where the parts of the dollar of gasoline go. The largest share goes to refining, wholesaling and Wall Street commodity brokers. The next largest share goes to government in the massive taxes government levies on gasoline. The next smaller share goes to transporting gasoline from terminals to the local gas station, and then to credit card company fees they charge retailers to process consumer credit card charges. The smallest share, about 1%, goes to the local retailer.
